Sikorsky S 51 Helicopter 1948

This particular Sikorsky S-51 c/n 51-102, SAAF A-1 was the 102nd on the production line and arrived in South Africa in 1948. Two 30-gallon tanks were fitted on the fuselage sides and arranged to feed through the exhaust as can be seen in the video. A DDT/ diesoline mixture was used to spray the Tsetse Fly in what was then known as Zululand. A-1 was transferred to from 15 AD to 12 Squadron at Mtubatuba for spraying operations on 25 November 1948. My take on this film clip is that a demonstration of the Sikorsky S-51’s abilities was made prior to it been transferred to 12 Squadron
